4 Quick Tips to Build Confidence and Self Esteem

February 23, 2016 Confidence

Doesn’t it seem like some people are just born confident? The truth is, confidence is something that takes time to build and requires discipline to constantly improve. If you’re concerned with your current level of confidence or if you’re looking for some quick tips to build confidence and self esteem then we recommend watching the video below and implementing these 4 quick tips.

Keep in mind that even if you don’t feel confident, being able to come off as confident in the eyes of your peers, class mates, or colleagues will make you feel much more confident over time. This is why our 4 quick tips to build confidence and self esteem below focus on small behavioral tweaks that can have big results when used on a daily basis.

Eye Contact

Have you ever tried talking to someone that won’t look you in the eyes? It’s a very unsettling feeling when someone refuses to make eye contact.

Confident people don’t mind looking other people in the eyes. Making eye contact shows the other person respect and instantly portrays a higher level of self-confidence. If you’re the type of person that won’t look others in the eyes then your first assignment is to start making eye contact. You don’t have to gaze into their eyes but making eye contact for short periods, 3-5 seconds at a time can help increase trust with the other person and make you appear more confident. As you become more comfortable, you can increase the amount of time spent making eye contact.

Smile More

Very similar to eye contact, confident people don’t mind showing off their smile. Whether they’re walking in the street or checking out a store, making eye contact and showing some teeth will make everyone around you feel more comfortable and make you appear to be the most confident person in the room.

Own the Walk

Most people take very small steps and keep their head down when walking, resulting in other perceiving them as unconfident. You shouldn’t go full strut but you should hold your head high (while making eye contact and smiling, of course) and take a longer stride than usual. You should feel like you’re going somewhere important. Don’t walk like you’re late. Walking like you’re going somewhere important and walking like you’re late are two completely different types of walks. Again, head up, increase your stride, and make eye contact and smile at a few people along the way. Practice these 3 tips together and your confidence will increase quickly.

Improve Your Posture

Sitting up straight is a another great way to instantly feel and appear more confident. When it comes to improving your posture it’s important to pick your head up, push your shoulders back, push your chest out a little bit more than usual, and tighten your core. Like owning the walk, you don’t want to overdo it. Adjust your posture to a point that feels comfortable and slowly improve from there. It won’t take long to feel the difference and people around you will notice, as well.

One thing to keep in mind is that if you’re the type of person that looks down at your phone a lot then your posture is suffering. People naturally look down and round their shoulders and back when looking at their phone. Put your phone away and follow these tips.

BONUS TIP: Fake It

Everyone is insecure about one thing or another, and the four tips above are quick ways to make you look and feel more confident. With a little practice, these simple tips will result in colleagues looking to you for answers because you’ll be the one that exudes the most confidence.

Believe me, even if you practice these quick tips to build confidence and self esteem on a daily basis but don’t really feel more confident, the people around you are noticing the change even though you can’t. Implement these tips and then keep it up! You’re probably not going to feel a big confidence boost right away but keep going and fake it until it starts to feel more natural.
